      Arrangements for Admission to the Sixth Form 2020-2021

      Admission to Year 12 at the Academy is a separate and distinct point of entry. Entry to the sixth form will be in accordance with the Admissions Criteria set out below, which will be reviewed annually by the governors. 

      A predominantly academic Sixth Form of up to 400 students will be admitted each year. The Sixth Form will comprise of two year groups. The Sixth Form in each of its two years will comprise of 200 students in Year 12 and 200 students in Year 13. The minimum published admission number (PAN) for external applicants is 40.

      1. Entrants will have to satisfy the following criteria

      1.1 Entry requirements for A level, all students will have to meet our basic entry requirement, which is a minimum of 5 grades 6-9 at GCSE or equivalent alongside a minimum of grade 5s in English and Maths. 

      There are then individual subject requirements that students must meet. For more information on these requirements, please see the Sixth Form Prospectus. 

      For applied learning courses the requirements are 5 grades 5-9 at GCSE or equivalent alongside a minimum of grade 5s in English and Maths.

      1.2 Children with a Statement of Special Educational Needs, where the academy is named in the Educational Health Care plan.  

      1.3 Students (maximum 10%) will be selected on the basis of our Sports    Specialism in Basketball in Years 12 and 13 based on a skills based Aptitude Assessment.

      1.4 Students who are already on roll at the City of London Academy (Southwark) if they meet the academic entry criteria published in the annual school Sixth Form Prospectus for the year of entry.  All applications for admission to post 16 provision will be considered and decisions will be based on the application of the specific conditions for entry published annually in the Post 16 Prospectus & Application Pack,  including where applicable Sixth Form oversubscription criteria. If fewer than 175 of the Academy’s own year 11 pupils additional external pupils will be admitted until year 12 meets its capacity of 200.

      1.5 Applications for entry into City of London Academy (Southwark) Sixth Form are accepted from both internal and external candidates. The minimum number of external students likely to be admitted will be 40.

      2. Where there is oversubscription, the following preference criteria will be applied

      a) “Previously looked after children are children who were looked after but ceased to be so because they were adopted or became subject to residence orders or special guardianship orders immediately following having been looked after. A looked after child who is (a) in care of a local authority, or (b) being provided with accommodation by a local authority in the exercise of their social services functions (see the definition in section 22(1) of the Children Act 1989) at the time of making an application to a school.”  

      b) Children of parents in armed forces. 

      c) Students (maximum 10%) will be selected on the basis of our Sports Specialism in Basketball in Years 12 and 13 based on a skills based Aptitude Assessment.

      d) Children who live nearest to the Academy measured by the shortest safe walking distance from their normal family home to the corner of Lynton Road and St James Road by the main Academy Building. "Our measurements are performed using Hometrack software that calculates the shortest, safest walking route in metres” A centroid (centre point), supplied by Ordnance Survey (OS) “When dealing with multiple applications from a block of flats to the Academy, lower door numbers will take priority."

      e) Where the Distance Tie-Break does not produce a clear outcome (i.e. two children live precisely the same distance from the school), the place will be determined by random allocation supervised by a person independent of the school.

      f) Places offered are subject to course availability and we reserve the right to withdraw courses at short notice if they fail to recruit sufficient numbers.  All offers expire after the stated enrolment date.

      g) Late applications will only be considered where there are a surplus of places in the Academy and in the required courses once the over subscription criteria has been applied.

      3. Waiting Lists

      3.1 Waiting lists for Year 12 students will be maintained until the end of the Autumn term of the Academic Year.  Additions to the waiting list will be ranked in line with the published oversubscription criteria. 

      3.2 The Academy will not give priority admission to the Sixth Form for siblings of students currently studying at the Academy.

      3.3 The City of London Academy will use the following time-table for applications to the Sixth Form (exact dates may vary from year to year):

      a) September - the City of London Academy will publish in its prospectus information about the arrangements for admission to the Sixth Form, including oversubscription criteria, for the following September (e.g. in September 2019 for admission in September 2020). This will include details of Open Evenings and other opportunities for prospective students and their parents to visit the Academy. It will notify the date by which applications must be received. The City of London Academy will also provide information to Southwark LA for inclusion in LA Post 16 literature.

      b) October/November - the City of London Academy will hold an Open Evening/opportunities for existing students at City of London Academy, parents and for external applicants and parents to visit the City of London Academy.

      c) January - closing date for applications is Monday 13th January 2020.  External applicants must ensure that Supplementary information sheet is completed and submitted by their current predicted grades are submitted by their school. 

      d) February/March - Prospective students will be asked to attend a briefing to discuss subject choices, subject options and career options. 

      e) March - Students will be informed of the results of their application.

      4. Consultation

      a) The City of London Academy shall consult each year on its proposed admission arrangements in accordance to the Schools Admissions Code.

      b) Any other admission authorities for primary, special and secondary schools located within the relevant area for consultation set out by the Southwark and Corporation of London LAs.

      5. Determination and publication of admission arrangements

      Following consultation, the Academy must consider comments made by those consulted.  The Academy shall then determine its admission arrangements by April of the relevant year and notify those consulted what has been determined.
